Medical Alert - DOGS-When NOT to Vaccinate

When NOT to Vaccinate Your Pet

We have been told time and again that vaccinations are important in protecting both our pets and ourselves. While for the most part this is true, however,  most of us are unaware that in some cases vaccinations are causing serious illness and even death to some of our beloved pets. Perfectly healthy animals are becoming seriously ill due to over vaccination. This does NOT mean we should all stop immunization for out pets! What it means in plain terms is we need to educate ourselves.

The following breeds of dogs are known to be at high risk for immunological reactions:

  1. Akita
  2. American Cocker Spaniel
  3. Australian Shepherd
  4. Collie - Merle
  5. Dachshund - all varieties, especially long haired variety
  6. Doberman Pinchers Blue & Fawn
  7. German Shepherd Dog
  8. Golden Retriever
  9. Great Dane & Harlequin Great Dane
  10. Kerry Blue Terrier
  11. Irish Setter
  12. Old English Sheepdog
  13. Poodle - all varieties, especially Standard Poodle
  14. Scottish Terrier
  15. Shetland Sheepdog
  16. Shih Tzu
  17. Vizsla
  18. Weimaraner
  19. As well as breeds of white or predominantly white coat color or with coat color dilution.
Vaccinations in most areas are required by laws. In the event you have a breed that is on this list, discuss your concerns with your veterinarian.  Some vaccinations although given yearly, the doses are not necessarily needed yearly. A Titer Test can be performed to see if a pet is protected from a paticular disease.  For a susceptible breed some vaccinations may be started at a later date or not given as frequently.
